Who is Glinda?
In case you do not know, Glinda is the Witch of the North from the famous Wizard of Oz film which in turn is based on the original novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum.

Let’s talk about Glinda Good Witch’s role in the Wizard of Oz. The first appearance of Glinda is when she arrives in a bubble and tells Dorothy that she, or at least the farmhouse in which she and her dog Toto had been transported by a tornado had killed the wicked Witch of the East when it came to rest. Glinda then asks Dorothy if she is a good or bad witch. Dorothy then tries to explain to Glinda that she isn’t a witch at all, but it takes time before Glinda believes her. Glinda magically transfers the magic slippers from the dead witch to Dorothy’s feet and tells her to seek out the mysterious Wizard of Oz by following the Yellow Brick Road and not to remove the slippers otherwise she’d be at the mercy of the wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion on her journey.
Glinda appears again towards the end of the story, after the Wizard who was trying to to return Dorothy and Toto back to Kansas by balloon suddenly took off, when Toto jumped out of the balloon to chase a cat followed by Dorothy. Thinking they would both be stranded in Oz forever Glinda explained that she already had the power to return home herself and all she needed to do is follow her instructions, closing her eyes, tapping her heels together three times and chanting “There’s no place like home”.
The actress who played Glinda was Mary William Ethelbert Appleton known in Hollywood as Billie Burke. Born in 1884, in her early life she toured around the USA and in Europe as her father Billy Burke worked in a circus. Eventually she moved to London in the United Kingdom and got to enjoy performances in the historic West End which gave her the inspiration to become an actress and in 1903 made her first appearance on the London stage.
